A gift of life

Growing up in Connecticut, Tabitha Livernoche spent countless hours playing with her cousins. With nearly 40 of them, it was hard to pick a favorite. But there was always a special bond between Tabitha and her cousin Joey Talmadge, just a few years younger. The best friends shared play time on the swings, camping trips and numerous family activities – even baths when they were toddlers. There was nothing that Tabitha wouldn’t do for Joey. On March 21, 2017, she proved that – by giving him a kidney. As you might imagine, this wasn’t part of the life either imagined. At age 18, Joey began to experience problems with an enzyme in his kidneys. Ten years later, Joey lost kidney function and was...

Motherly advice

Everyone has a mother. She gave you life, and in most cases, helped nurture you into the person you've become. Moms are quite amazing creatures. Mom has eyes in the back of her head, a last nerve that you're always on, and exceptional counting skills, because if she's told you once, she's told you a thousand times.  And even though she is not your maid, nothing is ever really lost until Mom can't find it. Moms are particularly sensitive to dirt, activity, and temperature. Mom wants everything clean - your room, your plate, your mouth, and your underwear (in case of an accident).  Mom doesn't want you to jump on the bed, jump to conclusions or especially, jump off a cliff, even...

Stronger than the Wind

You’ve heard the expression “If you need something done, ask a busy person.” Today, few people fit that description better than Allen Tate Realtors® – some of the busiest and most responsive people around. And where there’s a Tate, there’s a way. Especially when it comes to public education and improving the quality of life in local communities. On April 15, a tornado with 135 mph winds swept through east Greensboro, N.C. and left a 33-mile path of destruction, badly damaging homes and three elementary schools. Nearly 1,000 students who attended Erwin Montessori, Hampton Elementary and Peeler Open Elementary were suddenly without a school. Fortunately, because the storm hit on Sunday, the schools were empty. But there were nearly two months left in...

A foundation to ‘do life’

Anyone who has ever built a home knows that the first step is laying a solid foundation to support the rest of the structure. For someone experiencing homelessness, the same principle applies. While housing is the solution, supports must be in place to help a household become secure and stable. According to a point-in-time count conducted in January 2017, 574 people – nearly half of them women and children – were experiencing homelessness in Guilford County, N.C. The problem is widespread; more than 3,000 children in the public school system there have experienced homelessness or are at risk. Approximately 300 students at the University of North Carolina – Greensboro (as well as students at other area colleges) are “couch surfers” – constantly...

Team Player

March 29 marks the opening day of the 2018 Major League Baseball season. And for the first time in 50 years, all teams will be in action. Boys – big and little (and girls, too) – will dream of the chance to play in the "Big Leagues" – or think longingly of what might have been. As a young man, Andy Bovender dreamed that dream. And then he lived it. Talk to professional business recruiters, and they'll tell you that former athletes often make excellent sales people, managers and team leaders. Today, Andy and his business partner, Debbie Hooker, run the 16-member, three-office Bovender Team, one of the top producing real estate teams with Allen Tate Realtors. For the third consecutive year,...

Love – and real estate

Houses are like spouses. They come in all shapes and sizes. They have unique features and challenges, and all need a bit of regular maintenance and TLC. Sometimes you have to look for a while before you find the right one. Occasionally, you know right away that you found the perfect match, and it's not long until you close the deal. But what happens when spouses sell houses? At Allen Tate, there are dozens of agent couples who work together "in the business." Here are a few stories of what happens when love meets real estate. ***** Sometimes, when you spy the perfect home, the timing just isn't right to make a move. That's what happened for Lindsey Strider, who crushed on her...

A different kind of agent

A missing child is every parent's worst nightmare. Unfortunately, there were more than 465,000 instances of missing children reported to law enforcement in 2016 alone (including endangered runaways). To most of us, missing children are the faces on the milk carton, the topic of Nancy Grace or something that happens to other people. Allen Tate Realtor® Carl Jones knows those other people. He's helped locate their missing children. After a 30-year career working with the FBI and NCIS, Jones spent five years as part of Team Adam, a special task force of the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children (NCMEC). Team Adam is named for Adam Walsh, a 6-year-old who was abducted from a Florida shopping mall in 1981 and murdered. Adam's case...
