Established in 1927, Bent Creek is the oldest experimental forest in the Eastern U.S. The preserved area is now used to research current issues that threaten or enhance the health and productivity of forests. The Bent Creek trail network features a variety of hiking, biking, and off-road trails.
The Rice Pinnacle – Ledford Loop trail takes you on an exploration of serene woods and lush forests. Catch glimpses of wildlife and peaceful surroundings as you zip through. This route follows wide gravel roads and dirt trails, making it a popular route for mountain biking and hiking. The trail is open year round and is beautiful to visit anytime. Parking is available at the Rice Pinnacle Parking Area.
Spring: Visiting the baby goats at the Carl Sandburg Home National Historic Site
Built in 1838, the Carl Sandburg Home National Historic Site is a 264-acre working farm and the former estate of poet and author Carl Sandburg and his wife, Lilian “Paula” Sandburg. A collection of Sandburg’s 10,000 books, papers, and notes are on display in the home. And five miles of hiking trails meander through the estate. Trails range from easy to moderate, with hikes past quiet ponds to the rounded, open-rock-face summit of Glassy Mountain.
The barn on the estate houses the descendants of Paula’s prize-winning goats, and baby goat season is one of the most popular times to visit! On years when the goats are bred, new baby goats join the herd between March and May. Pack a picnic and make a full day of the experience!
Summer: Hiking to Bridal Veil Falls in DuPost State Recreational Forest
DuPont State Recreational Forest lives up to its name, with enough to keep any outdoor enthusiast active. Hikers and mountain bikers have 86 miles of multi-use trails from which to choose. And waterfall lovers always have something new to discover.
Located in DuPont State Forest, Bridal Veil Falls is a 120-foot waterfall that visitors come from miles around to experience. An observation deck makes it easy to safely enjoy the waterfall’s cascade. And flat rocks at the base of the waterfall make a great spot for picnics and photos. The hike to Bridal Veil Falls is 4.4 miles round-trip from the designated parking area and visitor center.
As you explore DuPost State Forest, certain coves and sights may look familiar to you. DuPont has been a filming location for a number of movies, including “The Hunger Games”, “The Last of the Mohicans”, and “Don’t Let Me Go”.
Fall: Apple picking at Justus Orchard
