North Carolina is home to more than 700,000 military veterans—that’s one in every 15 residents. And yet, in exchange for putting their lives on the line, many veterans across the nation receive insufficient care upon their return home. These experiences only magnify the stress associated with their combat experiences and undermine the magnitude of their sacrifices.
That’s where community nonprofits step in. Veterans nonprofits champion those who fought for our freedom. Now, in celebration of our nation’s upcoming 250 years of independence, we’re encouraging others to support the local veterans nonprofits that we hold dear.
Allen Tate/Beverly-Hanks has a long history of supporting nonprofits and other causes in our community. Veterans nonprofits in particular allow us an opportunity to GIVE BACK and help those men and women who have sacrificed for our country as our communities continue to rebuild in the wake of Hurricane Helene.
Take note of the important work undertaken by the veterans nonprofits on this list. And keep reading to learn more about how Allen Tate/Beverly-Hanks works to GIVE BACK. BUY BACK. across the region.
Disabled American Veterans
Disabled American Veterans (DAV) helps veterans address their challenges of transition and assistance and achieve personal victories, great and small, to better thrive in civilian life. With nearly one million members, DAV provided more than 235,000 rides and helped file more than 560,000 claims, leading to $30.4+ billion in earned benefits received—in 2024 alone. Donations to DAV help with emergency relief, events, employment help, and more. Plus, the local chapters listed below usually meet monthly to network and discuss issues of importance to veterans and the organization, including legislation, volunteer efforts, and community projects.

Those who put their lives on hold and made sacrifices to defend our country deserve honor and praise. This is especially true at the end of life. Four Seasons Foundation’s “We Honor Veterans” program supports the unique needs of veterans and their families during their end-of-life journeys. Trained staff and respectful community members guide veterans through their life stories, some of which are traumatic, and guide them toward a more peaceful death. Veterans of Foreign Wars
In 1899, veterans of the Spanish-American War (1898) and the Philippine Insurrection (1899–1902) founded local organizations to secure rights and benefits for their service. Over the last 125 years, the VFW has successfully fought for the establishment of the Veterans Administration, development of the national cemetery system, compensation for Vietnam vets exposed to Agent Orange and veterans diagnosed with Gulf War Syndrome, and passage of the Veterans Access and Accountability Act of 2014, the 2019 Blue Water Navy Veteran Act, and the 2022 Honoring Our PACT Act—which the VFW considers one of the most significant pieces of veterans legislation in history.
