A short history of Fletcher, NC
Fletcher traces its deep roots back to 1795, when Samuel Murray first settled the land. The 10,000 acres he purchased, originally known as Murrayville, became one of the main way-stations on the Buncombe Turnpike in the first half of the nineteenth century. A hundred years before interstates were established, the turnpike was the main passageway for families, farmers, and traders traveling north from South Carolina into Western North Carolina and eastern Tennessee.
According to the town’s official history:
One of the reasons early settlers and farmers liked the Fletcher area is the rare availability of limestone. Limestone is a valuable resource for agricultural farming, and Fletcher has one of the few limestone quarries east of Knoxville. The limestone, which was first mined in the early 1800s, is still being actively mined in the quarry along Fanning Bridge Road.
However, through all this history, Fletcher remained small and unincorporated until 1989. Since then, Fletcher has grown at an accelerated rate as developers have built large subdivisions and bustling business parks. The town’s government is proving to be a leader in the region.
In Fletcher, the business community is looking to the future
Fletcher’s business community is growing along with the town. New, locally-owned businesses are opening every year. Locals and visitors alike enjoy community-centered businesses like Fletcher Village Bakery, Surf N Brew, and Fletcher Lawn & Garden Hardware. Local giant Sierra Nevada Brewery is also located in the area, drawing beer and nature enthusiasts alike.

No longer simply a sleepy stopping point between Asheville and Hendersonville, Fletcher is now a destination in its own right. Much of its popularity comes from its proximity to the wonders of the Western North Carolina mountains.
In recent years, the town has expanded its health and recreation initiatives, implementing a greenways master plan that makes the community more walkable and bikeable. Already well underway, the plan envisions expanding the network to some 13 miles. Two local parks offer opportunities for exercise and enjoyment close to home. The 60-acre Fletcher Community Park features playgrounds, picnic areas, walking trails, and baseball and soccer fields.
