Any pet owner knows that furry friends are like family! Your pets want to enjoy the outdoors just as much as you do. Creating a pet-friendly outdoor space ensures a safe environment for your pets to roam and play! And as a bonus, enhanced outdoor spaces can increase your home’s market value when it comes time to sell.

So, whether you’re looking to update, renovate, or simply enhance, here’s how to make your outdoor space pet-approved:

Build a fence

Build a fence to protect your precious pet from wandering away from home. It provides peace of mind while your pets run and play freely!

Organize a pet-friendly layout

To prevent your furry friend from jumping over furniture and knocking things over, create clear paths for them to navigate through your outdoor area.

Choose durable furniture and materials

Your pet may favor lounging on furniture. Opt for furniture that withstands wear and tear, like weather-resistant wicker or polywood. Add cushions designated for pets’ comfort, perfect for lounging and napping!

Create a designated potty area

Avoid accidents! Design a potty spot with gravel, a small patch of grass, or easy-to-clean fake turf. Keep it in an area away from your walking path!

Plant pet-safe greenery

Choose plants that are both visually appealing and safe to consume, in case your pet decides to nibble. Pet-safe plants like Baby Tears, Boston Ferns, and Catnip are best. Be mindful of plants that attract birds and other wildlife- they can either entertain your pet or drive them crazy!

Designate play areas

Include spaces for physical activity and mental stimulation. Cats might enjoy a fenced-in “catio” with climbing spots, stretching posts, and places to hide. Dogs, on the other hand, might love sand pits for digging and puzzle toys to play with.

Add a pool or hydration station

For water-loving pets, set up a kiddie pool where they can cool off and splash around. Also, set up a place where your pet has easy access to drinking water, whether that’s a water bowl or a pet-friendly fountain. Remaining hydrated is pivotal for their health and well-being!

Ensure access to shady areas

Make sure your space has shaded areas that are easily accessible to protect your pets from the summer heat. Use umbrellas or create natural shelters with trees and bushes.

Making your backyard or patio pet-friendly is sure to bring more joy into your pets’ lives. A thoughtfully designed outdoor space is also sure to impress potential buyers when you’re ready to sell, especially those with furry friends of their own!
