As the number one real estate firm in the Carolinas, it’s our job to keep up with the top amenities that home buyers are looking for. And right now, outdoor kitchens are what’s hot!

Outdoor kitchens are today’s backyard status symbol. If it’s your goal to keep up with the Joneses—or to give your property an edge during your next home sale—you’ll want a great outdoor cooking space at your house.

Here are three reasons why outdoor kitchens are among the top home trends right now.

1. The pandemic emphasized the need for outdoor entertainment areas

During the heart of the pandemic, we were all stuck at home, but no one wanted to be inside. Homeowners created a variety of outdoor entertainment areas as a result—everything from covered back patios to fire pits. Many thought the trend would dissolve once public entertainment areas reopened. But the desire to have outdoor living spaces is still going strong today. Outdoor fireplaces are having a major moment in the sun right now, as are outdoor kitchens. We predict the ability to transition from indoor to outdoor living spaces will only continue to climb in popularity.

2. Outdoor kitchens are a sign of luxury

Signs of luxury are expanding from the amenities available under a home’s roof to all those on an estate. As outdoor living spaces have become more popular among all homeowners, high-end buyers have become more discerning. They are looking for homes that offer ample space for entertainment, relaxation, and even exercise. This includes swimming pools, hot tubs, and outdoor fireplaces, as you would expect. But now, it also includes outdoor kitchens and dining areas, as well.

3. Outdoor kitchens are useful year round

Home buyers want an outdoor space to visit with family and friends year round, and outdoor kitchens and dining spaces provide that exact space. Like all party guests eventually congregate in the kitchen, everyone tends to home in on outdoor kitchens when outdoors. Inviting furniture and simple amenities such as a grill and ice chest make it easy to keep the party going well into the evening. And the addition of a fire pit or outdoor fireplace ensures that guests are comfortable every season of the year. Contrast that with an inground swimming pool, which has a limit on its usefulness during the colder months.

How much does it cost to install an outdoor kitchen for your home?

Residential outdoor kitchens can cost between $15,000 to more than $100,000 to install. That wide range reflects the variety of amenities and appliances you could choose to include, from grills to refrigerators to sinks. However, simple designs are a great home investment, allowing you to recoup your costs during your next home sale. According to the National Association of RealtorsⓇ, an inset grill, stainless steel drawers, ice chest, sink, and 60 square feet of concrete countertop is plenty. For this kind of install, you can expect a 100% return on your investment. And before you sell your home, you get to enjoy a wonderful outdoor entertainment space!
