A dog (or a cat) is man’s best friend. But pets need best friends, too. Thanks to Sarge’s Animal Rescue Foundation in Waynesville, animals across Haywood County have been saved from euthanasia and found forever homes.

What is Sarge’s Animal Rescue Foundation?

In 2005, Sarge the dog entered Haywood County Animal Shelter as a healthy, purebred German shepherd. Despite the team’s best efforts, Sarge was euthanized just one hour before rescue transport arrived. After that event, local volunteers formed a rescue foundation in his name to prevent the euthanasia of adoptable dogs and cats in the county shelter.

Today, Sarge’s Animal Rescue Foundation rescues animals for adoption or transport to a no-kill shelter or breed-specific rescue group. All animals are spayed or neutered and brought up to date on their shots. Sarge’s then facilitates pet adoptions directly from the Haywood County Shelter and manages the volunteer programs for both the shelter and Sarge’s Adoption Center.

Get involved with Sarge’s Animal Rescue

Your involvement helps Sarge’s reach further into the community to make a bigger impact on the local pet population. Volunteers give hands-on care to animals, provide community outreach, and help with cleaning and administrative support. Pet fosters provide a place in your home and your heart for an animal in need. And transportation volunteers take homeless dogs to partner rescues up north, where they quickly find loving homes.

There are also many pets in need of loving forever homes, if you’re interested in adoption.

Get more by giving back
