Fletcher takes pride in its past
Fletcher traces its deep roots back to 1795, when Samuel Murray first settled the land. The 10,000 acres he purchased, originally known as Murrayville, became one of the main way-stations on the Buncombe Turnpike in the first half of the nineteenth century. A hundred years before interstates were established, the turnpike was the main passageway for families, farmers, and traders traveling from South Carolina north into Asheville and eastern Tennessee.
According to the town’s official history:
One of the reasons early settlers and farmers liked the Fletcher area is the rare availability of limestone. Limestone is a valuable resource for agricultural farming, and Fletcher has one of the few limestone quarries east of Knoxville. The limestone, which was first mined in the early 1800s, is still being actively mined in the quarry along Fanning Bridge Road.
However, through all this history, Fletcher remained small and unincorporated until 1989. Since then, Fletcher has grown at an accelerated rate as developers build large subdivisions and bustling business parks.
Fletcher’s business community is looking to the future
Fletcher’s business community is growing along with the town. New, locally-owned businesses are opening every year. Locals and visitors alike enjoy Blue Ghost Brewing and many more community-centered businesses like Fletcher Village Bakery, Surf N Brew, and Fletcher Lawn & Garden Hardware. Local giant Sierra Nevada Brewery is also located in the area, drawing beer and nature enthusiasts alike.
“Our customers come a lot from Hendersonville, Mills River, Fletcher, Asheville—because we’re in the middle, like Fletcher. We have a lot of nice customers, and it just translates into the local community,” said Horn.
And it’s not just your standard restaurants and retail shops that are putting the town on the map. Organizations like Charlie’s Angels Animal Rescue support the four-legged residents of the area. And conveniently located near the airport, the WNC Agricultural Center’s 87-acre facility hosts major events year round. Residents from all over the region visit to enjoy the NC Mountain State Fair each fall.
“It’s been a real blessing to have really nice, local folks who have embraced us and enjoy being here,” said Horn. “And with the growth that’s happened in the area, I think there’s a lot of potential for Fletcher. We look forward to being here for many years.”
Fletcher is a great starting point for outdoor adventures
No longer simply a sleepy stopping point between Asheville and Hendersonville, Fletcher is now a destination in its own right. And much of their popularity comes from their proximity to the wonders of the Western North Carolina mountains.
In recent years, the town has expanded its health and recreation initiatives, implementing a greenways master plan that makes the community more walkable and bikeable. Already well underway, the plan envisions expanding the network to some 13 miles. Two local parks offer opportunities for exercise and enjoyment close to home. The 60-acre Fletcher Community Park features playgrounds, picnic areas, walking trails, and baseball and soccer fields. Kate’s Park, adjacent to the Fletcher Library, has playgrounds, trails, and an outdoor grilling area.

“We fell in love with this area, with everything there is to do outside, the convenience, again, a lot of free things to do, and it’s a great climate—just a lot of great things that we enjoyed, and we moved here because we wanted to be here,” said Horn.
Fletcher is also uniquely positioned for national and international travelers, and a great spot to host visitors from near and far. Residents are just minutes away from Asheville Regional Airport, which is home to six airlines offering over a dozen regional and national destinations. In fact, the airport offers nonstop flights to almost all major U.S. cities. The airport is going through a growth spurt of its own, adding new routes on a regular basis.
