March comes in like a lion, they say, but by the time it “goes out”, warm weather has begun to spread across Western North Carolina! Spring weather signals the beginning of a new season spent outdoors. And for those who live in Henderson County, there are plenty of ways to enjoy the water in these parts.
Though located in North Carolina’s mountain region, Henderson County is characterized by an extensive plateau along the French Broad and Mills River valleys. Numerous city parks, walking tours, hiking, road biking, swimming, fishing, camping, zip-lining, and whitewater adventures are within easy reach. That gives locals plenty of opportunities to engage with the vast natural areas around them.
Here are just a few refreshing ways to specifically enjoy the water near Hendersonville, NC.
Waterfall hikes
Hendersonville is located amidst a wealth of protected lands. Nearby, DuPont State Recreational Forest lives up to its name, with enough to keep any outdoor enthusiast active. Hikers and mountain bikers have 86 miles of multi-use trails from which to choose. And waterfall lovers always have something new to discover!
Located in DuPont State Forest, Bridal Veil Falls is a 120-foot waterfall that visitors come from miles around to experience. An observation deck makes it easy to safely enjoy the waterfall’s cascade. And flat rocks at the base of the waterfall make a great spot for picnics and photos. The hike to Bridal Veil Falls is 4.4 miles round-trip from the designated parking area and visitor center.
Tubing
Rivers are an essential component of our region’s lifestyle. They offer a continuous source of enjoyment for the people who live here, as well as visitors from near and far. Throughout the summer, it’s common to see streams of tubers floating lazily down our local rivers.
The gentle rapids of the Lower Green River flow through the lush forests of the Green River Gorge just south of Hendersonville near Saluda, NC. However, the river dam is released regularly, so tubing times are scheduled with the best water levels. Rent a tube and float a mile or all day. Great camping spots await you back on land.
Rafting / Kayaking
If you prefer to navigate local rivers with a paddle, there are abundant opportunities for rafting, canoeing, and kayaking. Are you a thrill-seeker, riding the whitewater in a custom kayak? Or do you prefer to band together with friends for a fun afternoon of paddling? Whatever your goals, the rivers of WNC are here to deliver.
One of the country’s most competitive and respected kayaking events takes place on the nearby Green River. Founded in 1997, the Green River Narrows Race has been called the “rowdiest kayak race in America.” Each year on the first Saturday in November, competitors face class V rapids and a narrow 18-foot drop (called the Gorilla) along the ¾-mile-long course. In addition to the main event, the competition is used to promote river conservation.
Fly fishing
With the abundance of natural rivers and springs running through the region, fly fishing is a big deal in WNC. Area rivers offer some of the nation’s best fishing, with abundant species and trophy game fish. It’s common to find bluegill, brim, crappie, rainbow and brown trout, and perch throughout our local rivers and streams.
From dawn to dusk, Henderson County locals love visiting Mills River Park. In addition to its constructed features, the park is a favorite local fishing spot. A portion of the North Mills River has a Delayed Harvest section, which is liberally stocked for sportsmen. In addition, the river is home to a variety of types of water that can challenge both the novice and experienced angler. Spend the day in the water, and enjoy the rest of the park once you’ve caught your fill. Nearby Sierra Nevada Brewery is a great destination for cold beverages after a long day of catching rainbow, brook, and brown trout.
Swimming holes
After a day on (or in) the water, you need some time to relax. Why not also do that in the water? Even into the hottest days of summer, mountain rivers and streams run cold with waters from highly elevated wellsprings. These swimming holes are among our favorites, but be sure to bring the right towels and supplies to keep yourself safe and warm. Assume all rocks are slippery, and never get into the water while you’re alone.
Just a few miles from Hendersonville, Sliding Rock is known locally as nature’s slip ‘n’ slide. This natural, fast-paced waterslide draws thousands of visitors each season to slide down its 60-foot, slick surface into a six-foot-deep pool of shockingly cold water at the bottom. A lifeguard stands on duty during the day between Memorial Day and Labor Day. No wonder it’s fun for the whole family!
