What is Blue Ridge Humane Society?
Blue Ridge Humane Society is an animal welfare nonprofit serving the Hendersonville area. They trace their roots back to the Henderson County Humane Society, first incorporated in 1950. The 5,000-square-foot animal shelter in Edneyville we know today was renovated in 2013 with a capacity of approximately 88 animals.
The mission of BRHS is to reduce pet overpopulation and improve their quality of life through adoption, collaboration, and community education.
What services do they offer?
BRHS finds lifelong homes for every pet through their Adoption Center. To do this, they assess behavior and treat conditions as necessary with all animals under their care. Prior to adoption, they give each animal all the appropriate vaccinations, a microchip, deworming treatment, and confirm they are spayed or neutered. In addition, each pet goes home with a 30-day free health insurance plan.
BRHS takes care of animals under their care, but they also help you with your pet needs. Beyond adoptions, Blue Ridge Humane Society works toward their mission through a number of ongoing community programs and services, including:
- A Spay/Neuter Incentive Program (SNIP).
- Pet food assistance.
- Meals on Wheels Pet Pals.
- Vaccine and routine wellness resources.
- Training classes for the public.
- Pet helpline.
- Education programs at schools and community organizations.
- Emergency vet assistance.
- and Housing assistance.
They also manage a pet foster program, re-homing listings, and lost and found tips, resources, and advice.
How can I support Blue Ridge Humane Society?
There are many ways to get involved with Blue Ridge Humane Society and support their mission to care for local pets.
Volunteer: Volunteers ages seven and up are welcome to donate their unique talents and skills to help the animals in the shelter. BRHS welcomes families and friends to volunteer together, as well as school groups, scout troops, and youth organizations.
Foster a Pet: For a longer-term volunteer opportunity, foster an animal in search of its forever home. Fosters provide shelter, food, and care at no cost to them and offer the love and attention animals need during their break from the shelter. There are even opportunities for businesses and organizations. The Business Adoption Ambassador program lets you foster a shelter animal at your location.
Donate: There are many ways to financially support Blue Ridge Humane Society. Make a gift through the mail or online. Donate in-kind items from their wish list. Or purchase a pet tribute plaque. Business partnerships and employer matching gifts also provide support financially and through in-kind support.
Shop the Thrift Store: Blue Ridge Humane Society’s thrift store helps you find your next treasure and support homeless animals at the same time. The stores is located at 1214 Greenville Highway in Hendersonville and sells gently-used donated items. All proceeds from your purchases go directly to helping animals at their shelter.
Attend an Event: BRHS hosts regular fundraising events, with an emphasis on fun. From the Valentine’s-themed You Can’t Buy Love But You Can Adopt It Photo Contest to county-wide Backyard Parties in fall, there are many great ways to have fun with your pet and help raise money for those under the care of BRHS.
