The arts in Highlands-Cashiers

Last Updated on January 9, 2025

The Western North Carolina mountain communities of Highlands and Cashiers straddle county lines, with Highlands in Macon County and Cashiers in Jackson. Nevertheless, natural topography (namely, a plateau) connects the townships in multiple ways. The region has become a premier destination for temperate climate and abundant outdoor recreation. But while the area’s natural beauty is certainly noteworthy, it is not the only source of entertainment around.

There are arts centers and performance venues in Highlands-Cashiers that rival those of any major metropolis. Here are just a few world-class ways to enjoy the arts in Highlands and Cashiers, NC.

Tour The Bascom in Highlands

For more than 30 years, The Bascom’s visual arts center has created experiences that “inspire and empower individuals and communities through seeing, thinking, and doing”. What began as a small exhibition space in one room of the Hudson Library now occupies a six-acre former horse farm near downtown. The Bascom’s 28,000-square-foot main building houses exhibition and event spaces, classrooms, offices, and a retail outlet. The center offers more than 60 classes and workshops between June and October, some led by the 14 artists-in-residence. No matter the season, you’re sure to experience an abundance of creativity and inspiration in physical form.

Walk the Village Green in Cashiers

Cashiers is a true crossroads community. Two roads bisect the town, serving as the only arteries in or out. At the nexus of these roads is Cashiers’ Village Green, a 13.2-acre community park and common area lined by diverse shops and award-winning restaurants. Walk the paths of the green and enjoy beautiful gardens, outdoor sculpture by renowned artists, and boardwalks over wetlands. It’s the perfect place to see the artistic creations of man and nature intertwined. The park also serves as an important metaphorical crossroads for the community, hosting thousands of visitors and more than 80 events each year. Save the dates for the next Groovin’ on the Green summer music series. Or check the calendar for an upcoming arts and crafts festival.

See a live performance at the PAC in Highlands

A perfect day in Highlands is not complete without live music or theater. Located downtown, Highlands Performing Arts Center (PAC) offers live and screened programs throughout the year from nationally recognized performers. The center also serves as the home stage for the Highlands-Cashiers Players and Highlands-Cashiers Chamber Music Festival. Mountain Theatre Company (MTC), one of North Carolina’s oldest theater companies, also calls the PAC its home. The company presents Broadway-style musical productions in an annual season running from June–December. Check the PAC’s calendar to see what fabulous shows are scheduled for you this month.
