In Western North Carolina, our surrounding mountains are one of the most noticeable traits that allow residents to Live Abundantly. These mountains aren’t just a scenic backdrop. They are alive with more diverse flora and fauna than almost anywhere on Earth.
It takes a lot of caring and compassion to keep our mountains healthy and vibrant. That’s why organizations like Friends of the Smokies are so important.
What is Friends of the Smokies?
Resource management projects and science programs, artists in residence and visitor protection groups. There’s always something going on in America’s most visited national park.
Friends of Great Smoky Mountains National Park (Friends of the Smokies) assists the National Park Service by raising funds and public awareness, as well as by providing volunteers for needed projects. Since 1993, they have raised more than $53 million! These funds support historic preservation, wildlife management, environmental education, and more in Great Smoky Mountains National Park.
For instance, in 2018, Friends of the Smokies raised $2.5 million to upgrade the park’s emergency radio system. New radios transformed the park’s ability to communicate with different agencies in the field, making all the difference in an emergency situation where every second counts.
