Halloween safety tips to take the fright out of the night

Halloween is a time to stir up some scary good times. Welcome guests and trick or treaters by ensuring their safety and fun. 1. Clear your porch and driveway of debris such as loose gravel, slippery moss, leaves, etc. It’s “acorn season” in the Carolinas, which means walking on your paved areas could be like walking on marbles, so remove those, as well as flowerpots, garden tools, hoses, bikes, toys, shoes and whatever else could be a safety hazard. 2. Secure any loose railings, steps, stepping stones, pavers etc. You’ve been meaning to do that, anyway. 3. Turn off the sprinkler system. Easily overlooked, but hard to forget. Remove sprinkler heads temporarily if they pose a tripping hazard. 4. Keep pets inside in their...

A discussion about deductibles

If you have any kind of insurance - and who doesn't - you have likely paid or at least, discussed a deductible with your insurance provider. The basics are pretty easy to understand: You, as the policyholder, agree to pay a certain amount or percentage toward the overall claim paid by your insurer. In the case of auto or home insurance, the amount of your deductible usually ranges from a few hundred to a few thousand dollars. But why do deductibles exist anyway? It's a matter of shared risk. The insurer pays the claim, and in turn, you are rewarded with a lower insurance premium. Generally, the higher the deductible, the lower your premium cost. While it may not seem like much,...

No one knows the future #FlashbackFriday

Life keeps us busy. With work, school, activities and errands, we often don’t take time to stop and plan for the future. Life insurance isn’t sexy, and no one likes to think about the worst, but it’s important to make sure your family is taken care of, in case you’re not around. Here are some things to consider regarding life insurance: Start with term. Term insurance is a great way to get started and the least expensive option. Term is for a specific period and will expire at the end of the term. You can use it to pay off a mortgage or helping with college needs for your children. They depend on you. If you have a spouse, partner or children or others...

What the car salesman won’t tell you #FlashbackFriday

Everyone loves a new car. Whether you are replacing an existing vehicle or adding another vehicle to your household, it’s important to understand how this “new addition” affects your insurance coverage. Active auto policies have automatic coverage for a specified number of days. The number of days for automatic coverage depends on state regulations AND whether the vehicle is a new or replacement vehicle. There are also stipulations as to whether your auto policy’s automatic coverage provides liability only or full coverage (comprehensive and collision). Before you begin shopping for your dream car (or maybe soccer team transport vehicle?), it’s a good time to talk with your insurance agent about the types of coverages required and available, to make sure you are fully...

‘Tis the Season for Giving

It’s the time of year when many of us will be receiving things that sparkle or fun new gadgets to play with. But before you get too excited about your gifts, take the time to make sure they are properly insured. Often it is assumed that items such as jewelry, artwork, antiques, furs and cameras are automatically covered to their full value under the homeowner’s policy. In most cases coverage for items such as these is limited, and you need to have special coverage to cover them to their full value. A personal articles policy will provide the specialized coverage you need. In case of a covered loss, this specialized coverage allows you to recover the value of the insured item.  When...

Oh Deer!

I love our house. It’s back off the road in what I call the “country,” and on any given night, you can see stars for miles. We live on a few acres of land, and it suits us better than the hustle and bustle of city living. But there’s one big drawback: deer. While these seemingly gentle creatures are beautiful and carry with them a sense of quiet magic, deer plus country roads plus vehicles equals a deadly combination. In the Unites States, there are more than 1.5 million deer-related car accidents each year. That’s over 1.5 billion in damages! And it’s not just the country roads are a susceptible to deer collisions. It’s not unusual to see deer near major highways, residential subdivisions...

Think “it” can’t happen to you?

When it comes to insurance, most of us are familiar with home, auto and health. But there are many other options for insurance coverage that you might want to consider: Identity theft: Once your identity has been compromised, the average time and cost of remedying the situation is 600 hours and $10,000. Most home policies offer this coverage for only $25 per year, which will reimburse you up to $25,000 for covered expenses incurred to repair your credit history and identity record in the event of an identity theft. Valuable Articles Coverage: Do you own expensive jewelry? Most basic home policies only provide up to $1,500 per item by theft of jewelry. Make sure your precious treasures are covered with this optional...

When winds blow, roofers follow

Have you ever seen roofing trucks that advertise they work with insurance companies? After spring and summer storms hit, it’s prime time for unscrupulous companies to canvas your neighborhood and knock on doors, claiming they are fixing your neighbor’s roof and offering to inspect yours – often with a “special deal” they claim your insurance will cover. But what if you believe you have actual damage? Rather than fall prey to one of these questionable door-to-door vendors, it’s a good practice to call your insurance company and ask for qualified companies that can inspect your roof. And it never hurts to get a second opinion. Once the insurance carrier has reviewed the roofer’s inspection report, your insurance company will advise what is covered....
