How to incorporate the Sherwin-Williams 2019 color of the year into your home

Sherwin Williams Cavern Clay

Last month, Sherwin-Williams announced the 2019 Color of the Year, Cavern Clay SW 7701, and we cannot wait to start incorporating it into our home!

“Forged by the sun. Fired by the Desert…Ancient, yet fully alive. Bohemian, yet totally refined,” states Sherwin-Williams’ about Cavern Clay.

This warm, southwestern inspired color beautifully captures the past few years’ themes of mixing bright, natural colors and modern features.

Lately, popular color palettes have been gaining more and more influence from the outdoors. The 2017 Sherwin-Williams color of the year was “Poised Taupe SW 6039” which is a brownish grey, reminiscent of worn and weathered natural materials. The 2018 color was “Oceanside SW 6496”, a vibrant blue, inspired by the body of water where it gets its name. So, it’s no surprise that the 2019 pick is also naturally derived.

Sherwin-Williams Color of the Year

If you love this beautiful burnt-orange, rusty, terracotta color — it’s actually very easy to incorporate into your home! Whether you want to just add a few touches here and there or want to drown the entire room in Cavern Clay (we won’t judge), there are so many ways to integrate it into your decor.

Terracotta Pots

Sherwin Williams Color of the Year

Because Cavern Clay is almost the exact same shade as terracotta pots, it just makes sense to use them when incorporating this organic hue into your home. Pick up a few of these simple, yet striking pieces at your local hardware store and plant some of your favorite greenery! They come in almost any size and are perfect for plants such as cacti and succulents, or other plants that prefer drier soil.

Throw Pillows and Blankets

Sherwin WilliamsThrow pillows and blankets are some of those amazing design pieces that can be functional as well as eye-catching! They are perfect for adding a pop of color to any room and for optimal comfort when just lounging around. If you’re looking for a solid color, this copper orange pillow and rust waffle weave throw from Crate & Barrel are pretty darn close to Cavern Clay! Or, if you want something with more detail, check out this burnt-orange kilim pillow from CariaHandmade on Etsy.

Wall art is a great way to be creative and allows you to show off a little more of your own unique tastes! Since Cavern Clay compliments so many other colors, you can try a picture or painting that uses it sparingly. This painting from artbyoak1 on Etsy uses touches of Cavern Clay along with a deep burgundy, yellows and even an ocean blue. Or, if you’re looking for a more solid Cavern Clay colored art piece, this print is a perfect choice.

Leather

Cavern ClayCavern Clay reminds us of natural materials such as red clay, wood and even leather! Adding a leather piece to your space is a great way to incorporate this color as well as give your space a sophisticated, yet functional feel. This leather couch and this leather armchair are incredibly close to the warm, terracotta color!

An Accent Wall or the Whole Room

Cavern Clay

We love this color so much, we definitely won’t judge you if you decide to repaint your entire house. However, a neutral color scheme with a brightly colored accent wall may be perfect for your space! This project from Wit & Delight shows you how you can incorporate the earthy tone into any room without it feeling overwhelming. Compliment Cavern Clay

If you’ve decided to incorporate this color into your home, you may be wondering what other colors go well with it. Sherwin-Williams recommends that you pair it with other causal and balanced neutrals

For a fresh and clean look, try pairing Cavern Clay with Origami White SW 7636, it’s classic and gives off a trendy, modern feel. For a warmer color palette, try it with the dusty brown Moth Wing SW 9174 and Dark Clove SW 9183. And, for a more unique and fun pairing — try sprinkling in some of Distance SW 6243, a greyish blue that we think is gorgeous.
