One of the great things that North Carolina offers, and one of the most special to me, is skiing and snowboarding in the mountains. North Carolina is one of the only states in the Southeast that has ski resorts in two sections of the state (Asheville and Boone).
One of the major things that sold me on attending my alma mater, Appalachian State University, was being able to participate in winter sports. I had always wanted to ski and snowboard. I knew I had the opportunity at Appalachian State since the slopes were 15 minutes from campus. My first experience was opening day at Appalachian Ski Mountain. I borrowed a friend’s snowboard to get my start. Luckily, Christmas was not too far away and the snowboard was very high on my list.
During my four years at Appalachian, I made many memories and friends during my experiences on the slopes. I will always remember learning to snowboard at Appalachian Ski Mountain, packing six guys deep in a Jeep Wrangler with equipment for an evening at Hawksnest (unfortunately they no longer offer skiing just snow tubing), the long runs of Sugar Mountain with college friends, our first ski date with my now wife Emily at Beech Mountain, and visiting my sister Sarah before she graduated from Western Carolina and skiing at Cataloochee in Maggie Valley.
Where will you and your family and friends go to make new memories on the slopes this weekend? Better hurry, ski season is wrapping up toward the end of March!
